Q: What is The Stuart Society?
A: The Stuart Society is the major fundraiser for the Museum of Fine Arts. As such, it promotes the welfare of the Museum, stimulates public interest and participation in Museum activities, works to increase the Museum’s general membership and maintains a close acquaintance with the activities of the Museum. It sponsors several major events each year.
Q: How did The Stuart Socety begin?
A: Mrs. Margaret Acheson Stuart, our Museum founder, along with Rexford Stead, the first director, and Horace Jayne, advisory curator, set the goals of the original Women’s Committee. There is no record of how many women first met on November 29, 1962. The Margaret Acheson Stuart Society was chosen for the name, bylaws were adopted, and officers were elected. Due to construction delays, the Museum of Fine Arts did not open until early 1965. Therefore, The Stuart Society is older than the museum itself.
Q: Can I join The Stuart Society?
A: Potential members of The Stuart Society must be members in good standing of the Museum of Fine Arts for one full year before a Stuart Society member may sponsor them as a new member.
Q: What are some of the events The Stuart Society presents?
A: In 2015, the events included a fall fashion show, a wine auction, Art in Bloom and Affaires d’Art, a series of small events offered throughout the year including lectures, dinners and parties.
Q: What does the Museum do with the funds raised?
A: Over $4 million has been raised since the inception of The Stuart Society fifty-one years ago. The funds have supported publications, operating expenses, major exhibitions, art acquisitions, art restorations, educational programs and capital improvements.
